Gloria in excelsis Deo

Posted by liling (Singapore, Singapore) on 4 April 2010 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

This was taken in All Saints Church in Galle Fort, set up when the Dutch colonised Sri Lanka. Many who live in the Galle Fort are Christians or Catholics, testament to how multi-religious Sri Lanka is.

This is apparent not just from the different religious idols at every other road junction. Our driver, Ravi, who was planning a Buddhist alms giving on his son's death anniversary, helped us realise just how accepting the Sri Lankans are of different religions. His wife is Catholic, and he, Buddhist. He encouraged his children to take up Catholicism, knowing how many days a year he is on the road. When his son died, the family buried him according to Catholic practices, and every year, on his son's death anniversary, the family holds a Buddhist alms giving.

Compromise, and religious harmony is absolutely possible.
